you are obviously not a wally but I still think it’s a big call, I haven’t played a Steinman so cant comment learnedly, if I ever get a chance, I’ll pay special attention though

Go to a store that specializes in Steinways. If there is a Steinway store near you, try one there.

Secondhand dealers usually have used Steinways that either need restoration or have not been restored properly(even worse).

A good one has such a clear tone. When you play just a note, its like heaven on earth. A single note is musical on a Steinway. There are all sorts of interesting sounds that one can make with a Steinway, or perhaps other good brands like Bosendorfer or Bluthner.

I have to agree somewhat. I’ve had the chance to perform on a steinway, and while the Kawai brand is okay, it’s a bit bright. I personally would opt for something else if I were piano shopping.

It’s all a matter of taste. Someone likes light pianos, while someone doesn’t. Saying that Kawai pianos suck is just dumb because they obviously don’t. A Steinway piano that has a better sound than a Kawai grand piano can cost up to three times more money so try keeping that in mind.
Also, the most popular piano producer of all, Yamaha, has one of the lightest actions in the piano industry. Bosendofer is much worse than Kawai and Steinway. That company is owned by Yamaha.

You may not have tried one of the better models of a Kawai grand piano because the best models have even heavier keys than a Steinway.

I have been a pianist and composer for over 30 years, and I think I know what I’m talking about.

You also have to consider who will play the piano when you are making one because only pianists can play a Steinway decently.
Kawai pianos are easier to play but they are pretty close to the quality of a Stinway.

Yamaha pianos are meant for amateurs,music schools/institutions and other people that can’t afford a better piano.

Believe me, if you don’t have the money for a Steinway, Kawai is the way to go.

I recently bought Kawai K6 upright, and I must say I wasn’t expecting such a high quality piano for only 11 000 $. I was overwhelmed when I played it for the first time!

U-3. However, I’m considering trading it in for a Kawai of the same size, the main reason being I find the Yamaha quite bright, and with my classical playing, I’m looking for something a little more mellow. Do you think Kawai is the way to go?
